Hei Lam Ng Odds & Ends - chapter 3: game cube

Odds & Ends is a collaborative artist’s multiples project by /ræk+ŋ4/ – Sabina Rak (ræk) and Hei Lam Ng (ŋ4). The project aims to repurpose seemingly worthless materials and turn them into new projects. With a focal interest in how language is constructed and used, we explore with this project how we make meaning through form, text, and materiality. By (re)assembling used materials and symbols, we encourage the audience to experience odd objects from different perspectives while considering a more sustainable artwork creation culture. Chapter 3: game cube is a collection of objects meant to provide “answers”. These objects take the form of gaming pieces such as: dice, coin, tarot card, origami fortune cookie, and Kau Chim sticks; while being redesigned with new symbols and meaning. The items are made of different repurposed materials such as paper, egg cartons, embroidery fabric, and packaging boxes. You, as a player, will pose questions and interpret the answers from these objects however you may operate them. While each piece is a token that gives “answer” by “chance”, the answers are only meaningful with the right question. 

Hei Lam Ng (she/her)

Hei Lam Ng is a Hong Kong-Canadian artist currently residing in Vancouver, BC, who has a great passion in artist’s books and printed matters. As a multilingual speaker of four languages (Cantonese, English, Mandarin, and Japanese), she is very interested in language concepts and structures, and the ambiguity of translation. Hei Lam holds a BFA in photography from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2014), and a MFA in Studio Arts (Print Media) from Concordia University (2025). She is the founder of “bocchi projects”, an artist’s group that features, encourages, and endorses small run book projects by independent artists. “Bocchi projects” has exhibited Canadian artist’s book works across cities in Canada, as well as Tokyo and Taipei internationally.
