Residency Description

Loosely inspired by the artist-run centre Intermedia, the Printermedia Residency Program is an extension of Malaspina’s Research Residency Program, which has been running at our Granville Island Studio for ten plus years. This pilot program is intended to explore the intersection of print media with other media.

Each participant will have the opportunity to practice an art form of their choosing while also having the option to access Malaspina’s print studio on Granville Island for an additional $50 per month. The fees for the program are calculated on a cost-recovery model. Residents will be required to become a lifetime member of Malaspina Printmakers Society for $5. Intersecting media could include:

dance, moving or still photography, on-site film processing, paintings, drawings, sculpture, jewellery, pottery, printmaking, fibreglass, epoxy, welding, woodworking, fired ceramics, or other possible media upon approval.

Residents have access to six ~350 square foot communal ventilated studios (one sound proof and another kiln compatible), kitchen, underground bike storage, shower, and industrial sinks. Of these six ventilated studios, one has been converted to a working dark room, one to a wood-shop, and another to a metal shop and jewellery studio. Available equipment includes a large format epson printer, adobe photoshop, a large format screen printing parapress and screens, two exposure units and a washout booth, a chopsaw, drill press, table saw, and other woodworking equipment, an etching press, an anvil, enamelling kiln, and other metal working equipment. Residents have the opportunity to bring in equipment or request specific equipment that is essential to their practice from Malaspina Printmakers.

Once selected, the residents will meet to work with Malaspina staff and current residents to begin planning the specific use of the space to meet the individual needs and project proposals of each resident.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until full. Apply online at https://forms.gle/oJeoXHD2A9MjWK7v6 Residents will be selected and notified within two weeks of applying. They will have an additional two weeks to confirm their involvement in the program and may begin their residency on the first of the following month, at which point the first monthly fee will be due. We encourage applications from everyone, especially visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (LGBTQ2S+), and others who may contribute to the diversity of the program.

This is a unique opportunity for artists to explore their practice within a communal research residency context. We would like to thank the City of Vancouver for their support of this program.
