In this afternoon workshop we will create whistles from fresh-cut wood. This is a fun project, introducing practical and creative skills to create small wood objects. We will learn about fresh or "green" wood, and how to safely use some of the tools in the woodshop to prepare this wood. We will have an introduction to carving with knives, and spend time together shaping our whistles and practicing our whittling. By the end of the day, we can all toot our whistles in farewell.

Pippa Lattey works in sculpture, kinetic sculpture, drawing, and textiles. Her studio practice is sensitive to time and place, and her work is strongly material based, combining craft techniques, found objects and site-specific materials. She collects wood from fallen urban trees for woodturning and carving. This allows her to work with fresh green wood over time, as it shrinks and dries. Pippa is researching trees on UBC's campus, as artist in residence at FLEET: UBC starting in September 2026. https://www.fleetstudios.org/program/fleet-ubc Pippa is a member of the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild, and the adhoc plots artist collective. She also collaborates with sound artist Thomas Evdokimoff to create wind-activated musical instruments. Pippa studied at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (BFA 2016), Langara College (Fine Arts Diploma 2013), and the University of Victoria (BSc, Computer Science).
