Join me for a fun experience as we explore the art of stone lithography in an open studio setting! If you
have an interest in using your drawing skills within the printmaking process, then this course is for you.
Developed in 1789 by Bavarian composer and playwright, Aloys Senefelder, this printmaking technique
quickly gained popularity and enabled artists to naturally draw on a flat slab of limestone to create
images.
How does the process work?
Lithography is an intricate printmaking process that revolves around the principle that water repels grease
and vice versa. To begin, the artist draws with traditional grease-based materials on a polished slab of
limestone. Once the drawing is complete, the image is chemically stabilized for printing. During printing,
the stone is moistened with water, with the artist “sponging” throughout the printing process. An oil-based
printing ink is applied with a roller, adhering only to the positive parts of the image, while being repelled
by the wet, negative areas. A sheet of paper is placed on top of the inked matrix and then run through the
press. The pressure from the press transfers the image to the paper.
This one-day workshop is a fast-paced introduction to the process of stone lithography. Students will learn
about the basics of drawing, etching, and printing in black ink. Each participant will create a crayon
drawing from a large, pre-grained stone. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a small
edition of hand printed lithographs. This is a fun and dynamic way to explore a new technique in a
welcoming space. No prior printmaking experience is needed, and all materials are provided.
