Malaspina Printmakers is pleased to present Residence, an exhibition of new work produced by Scholarship Resident Darian Goldin Stahl, over her eight month residency. This arts-based research is a collaborative cycle of informing and reconstructing identity with her sister, Devan Stahl, who is a clinical bioethicist at Michigan State University.
Of her exhibition, Stahl writes, “the elements of this exhibition read as a psychological snapshot of the patient’s anxious mind when she is being medically scanned, and how these memories weigh on everyday life. I am most interested in the tension between reductive medical artifacts and the living, whole body they are meant to serve. The mechanical lines and hyper-saturated colors of the original prints, bookwork, and installation emphasize the artifice of medical object, while the organic curves of the personified hospital gown imagery recall the realities of the ill body in its noticeable absence. The aim of this work is to remind the viewer that our bodies are not made of pixels and glossy facades, but of real and complex matter that is not always beautiful, but is always wondrous.”
Darian Goldin Stahl was awarded the 2015-16 Scholarship Residency at Malaspina Printmakers, where she has been conducting research and making new work for the past eight months. She has been accepted to Concordia University as a PhD candidate in Fine Art Humanities, starting fall 2016. Previously, she received a MFA from the University of Alberta, a BFA from Indiana University Bloomington, and studied at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, in Venice, Italy. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and the United States, with upcoming solo and two-person exhibitions at Alberta Printmakers in Calgary, and Martha Street Studio in Winnipeg.
