Using sculpture and textiles, Anne Low’s practice is concerned with how decorative forms pervade throughout history and speak to both historical and contemporary material conditions and wider personal and emotive narratives around the impulse to individuate space, surface and object. During her Research Residency, Low will produce a series of prints that combine etching and screen printing. Having studied the soft-ground etching technique used by artist Betty Goodwin (1923-2008) to print items of clothing, Low will employ a similar technique using handwoven cloth. These etchings will become the ground for screen prints of decorative patterns found in wallpaper rollers collected by the artist. With this new series of works Low is seeking to combine the specific textural qualities of cloth with the graphic flatness of repetitive patterns into single compositions.
Anne Low is based in Vancouver, Canada. She has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Artspeak, Vancouver in 2017. Solo exhibitions include Some Rugs and Blankets, The Taut and the Tame, Berlin, 2012 and Women’s Assembly: Two Scenes from a Radio Play, Hex Projects, London, 2008. Her work was included in the group exhibition Reading the Line at The Western Front, Vancouver in 2015 and her collaboration with Evan Calder Williams, A Fine Line of Deviation, was shown at Issue Project Room, New York in 2016. She has collaborated with The Grantchester Pottery as part of The Grantchester Pottery Paints the Stage, Jerwood Space, London, 2015; ARTIST DECORATORS, ICA, London, 2013 and Studio Wares, David Dale Gallery, Glasgow, 2013. Her weavings made in collaboration with Gareth Moore were shown as part of his work A place, near the buried canal for dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel, 2012.
