Kyla Mallett will present an artist talk, on Sunday, May 15, at 2pm, to discuss her Research/Collaboration Residency.

Kyla Mallett’s Research/Collaboration Residency Cosmic Reflections, taking place this Fall 2015, will focus on the research and application of the process of ‘diamond-dust’ screen printing, working with collected imagery from an ongoing archive of self-help and new-age source material as a means to learn this challenging process. Working closely with Malaspina’s Studio Printer Matt Parisien, this residency will consist of a period of research into the process of creating diamond-dust screen prints, followed by a series of tests and experiments as they work to implement the process in the print studio. While teasing out the process, Mallett will draw imagery from her ongoing exploration of ‘new-age’ healing and alternative belief systems in recent works, including astrological charts, maps of the heavens and symbols from self-improvement books. The ‘diamond-dust’ process has been used in screen printing for decades – most famously by Andy Warhol, and later by Damien Hirst, among others – and employs the application of diamond dust or finely ground glass onto the print.

This residency is generously supported in part by the British Columbia Arts Council.

Special thanks to Brian Messini of Proper Design for his collaboration in the production of this work.

Kyla Mallett completed her MFA at the University of British Columbia in 2004 and her BFA at Emily Carr University in 2000. Working primarily in photography, text and print media, her practice engages the intersection of culture and language. She uses archival and statistical research to examine transgressive activities in cultural arenas such as adolescence, feminism, academia, and art. Past works have examined schoolgirls’ notes, girl bullying, gossip, marginalia in library books, hauntings, and aura reading.

Mallett’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton), Modern Fuel (Kingston), Canadian Cultural Centre (Paris), and The Power Plant (Toronto). She has had solo exhibitions in Vancouver at Artspeak, Catriona Jeffries, and Access, as well as ThreeWalls (Chicago), Mount St. Vincent University Gallery (Halifax), The Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), and Mercer Union (Toronto). She is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Visual Art and Material Practice and the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University in Vancouver.
