Gary Sim was born in Vancouver BC in 1951, and lives in the West End. He worked on BC RAIL Rock Gangs from 1978 to 1987 drilling, scaling, blasting, and working on derailments, washouts, and heavy salvage projects. Sim wrote and published Railway Rock Gang in 2013, a 196-page illustrated memoir. After leaving BCR, he had a 31-year career in architecture, working in numerous positions including drafting, network administration, model building, 3D rendering & animation, then construction administration. He worked for Stantec, DGBK, Toby Russell Buckwell, and Bingham Hill. From 2000 to 2015 he was a registered Architectural Technologist.AIBC. The Burnaby Art Gallery commissioned him to produce limited edition prints Gallery in Winter for their 2007 Christmas card and Gallery in Summer for their fiftieth anniversary celebration in 2017. The Gallery also curated an exhibition of his limited edition prints Coast Range in 2007, a solo exhibition of large format pencil drawings Surface Tension in 2017, and have a number of his prints in their Permanent Collection. For 25 years he has compiled information on the visual artists of BC, now posted on-line for free access at sim-publishing.com/bca/bcahome.htm. The project lists over 20,000 artists in 4,000+ web pages, illustrated by 1,500+ images. It won a BC Historical Federation Certificate of Merit in 2013 and received a publication grant from Dr. Yosef Wosk in 2019. A series of donations to the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa resulted in their 2018 Library & Archives curatorial exhibition Gary Sim – The B.C. Artists Donation. He has given a number of lectures on art and artists. Galleries West recently published an article by Janet Nicol about BC Artists. Ongoing art projects include a series of pen & ink drawings The Adventures of Noman, and a number of small-format relief prints. The majority of Sim’s prints are limited edition linocuts, printed at home on his antique J. Smart copy press, using Cranfield Caligo Safewash ink. Papers include Arches Text Wove, BFK Rives, and Japanese Kozuki. Many prints are of animals, birds, and insects, a few include buildings, and some are abstract. All of Sim’s artwork is based on his own experience, photography, and imagination.
