Ken Pattern is a Canadian artist currently residing in Jakarta, Indonesia. He attended Emily Carr College of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design), where he majored in printmaking. Having no access to printmaking facilities in Jakarta, Pattern creates ink drawings and paintings, and frequently returns to Vancouver to create stone lithographs at Malaspina Printmakers. He began documenting local scenes in Jakarta when he moved there in 1988. Since he arrived, Jakarta has changed dramatically, and his work has shifted to document these transformations. Pattern's work features finely detailed landscapes and narrative scenes of Indonesia and Canada that contrast modernity and traditional culture, and explores conflicts between humans and nature. He has shown his artwork in North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
