Intaglio is the family of printing and printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface, and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. It is the direct opposite of a relief print. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface or matrix, and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint. This workshop is an introduction to the basics of etching. Using a zinc plate, participants will learn plate preparation, explore techniques for image making (acid and acid free), and create original prints with a press.

Maya Schueller Elmes is a printmaker from London, UK. She studied for a BA in Fine Art at Kingston University in London from 2008-2011, where she made work that explored drawing, photography, printmaking and installation. Maya has completed a number of artist residencies in the UK, including a residency in the print studio at Central Saint Martins School of Art from 2015-2017. Since moving to Canada in the summer of 2017, Maya has taught printmaking, bookbinding and visual art classes at various print studios and art schools in Vancouver. Maya specialises in etching and aquatint using zinc, but works across a variety of print techniques including screen printing, lino cut and collograph. Her work has been shown in the UK, USA and Canada, and she has a one off artist book in the collection at the University of Kent, UK.
