Join Val Loewen in the pursuit of the harmonious relationship between copper, acid, and pressure! This workshop covers the basics of intaglio, from drypoint to etching.
Intaglio is a family of printmaking techniques in which an image is incised into a plate, the incised areas of the plate hold ink during the printing process. A traditional etching press is used to apply enough pressure onto the plate to transfer the ink onto cotton rag paper.

Using copper and plexi glass plates, participants will learn plate preparation, explore techniques for image making (acid and acid free), and create original prints with a press.

Val Loewen is a Vancouver based artist and printmaker who has worked as a collaborative printmaker, print technician, and instructor in various printmaking studios in Vancouver since 2013. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, and Japan and is held in national and international collections. Her practice explores patterns of order and disorder and incorporates a variety of mediums including: printmaking, drawing, collected objects, and photo-based processes.
She holds a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax where she focused on printmaking and sculpture.
