A 20-year fascination with the mezzotint technique has led artist Masataka Kuroyanagi to explore its intense and alluring fields of darkness. A classic technique developed by a German soldier, Ludwig Von Siegen, mezzotint involves rocking a copper plate back and forth in precise ways to achieve rich fields of ink. Masataka Kuroyanagi was born in Tokyo in 1961. He graduated from Tokai University in 1984, where he studied under mezzotint artist Katsunori Hamanishi. He has taught as a professor and invited artist at many institutions, including the Capilano University Art Institute in North Vancouver, Canada. His work has been shown all over the world, at print festivals and exhibitions in Thailand, Japan, France, Portugal, and Canada. In 2014, his work was awarded the Medal of Honour at the 15th International Triennial of Small Graphic Forms in Lodz, Poland.
