Andreea Mateescu Plate Lithography Workshop - Toner Washes l Three Saturdays in March

Join Andreea Mateescu for a fun three-day workshop to learn the process of toner wash transfers on ball-
grained, aluminum plates. Traditionally in lithography, artists have used special grease-based crayons and
ink washes to create images on stones and plates. In this workshop, we will be using toner, a powdered,
styrene-based plastic used in copy machines and laser printers, as a drawing medium.
Toner is an excellent drawing material that can be mixed with either water or rubbing alcohol to produce
interesting marks, textures, and effects. The process is very simple. To begin, each participant will create
a composition on a piece of clear mylar. Once complete, the mylar drawing is pressure-transferred onto
the aluminum plate by running it through the press. After the image is successfully transferred, the toner
is fused to the plate with heat. When properly fused, the toner will change from a powder form to a
hardened layer of plastic. Once the toner is heat-set, the artist can print directly with color. This process is
less labor intensive and time consuming than traditional lithography and allows you to explore the
possibility of color printing.

Andreea Mateescu is a printmaker based in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2017, she received her
BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Before this, she studied fine arts at Capilano
University. In 2021, she attended the world-renowned Tamarind Institute of Fine Art Lithography in
Albuquerque, New Mexico where she completed the two-part intensive Printer Training Program,
and received her certification as a Tamarind collaborative printer.
