Lithography is a traditional printing method that uses a chemical process to create images from a flat
surface. The process is known for its ability to capture delicate, hand-drawn and expressive marks.
Although originally done on flat Bavarian limestone, aluminum plates have been used commercially
in Europe since 1891. Aluminum plate lithography is less labor intensive compared to traditional
stone lithography. The plates hold plenty of detail and also lightweight, easy to handle, and portable.
In this five-session workshop, students will learn to fundamental basic of aluminum plate lithography
from drawing with traditional grease-based materials to the technical process of etching, and printing
on a lithographic press.
