In this workshop participants will be introduced to three basic approaches to darkroom printing: photograms, printing from negative (film or digital transparency), and experimental processes. The focus of these classes centres around the idea that the darkroom is not simply a place for making traditionally ‘perfect’ prints from a negative, but instead, a laboratory for an entirely unique kind of image making. Together we will look to artists who have used darkrooms in unconventional ways for inspiration. Participants with no experience with analog photography or print making are very welcome!

Each participant will be provided with:

  • 25 sheets of 8x10 photo paper {additional expired paper also available}
  • Development, stop and fix chemistry
  • Copper and iron toning baths

Spoken languages: English and German

Felix Rapp (b. 1993, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany) lives on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əmSḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Sel̓íl̓witulh Nations known as Vancouver. Rapp’s artworks often blend photography, printmaking, sculpture and writing. These various approaches are bound together by a fixation on ephemeral visual material from popular culture such as t-shirt graphics and movie posters. Rapp has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. He is the co-founder and co-editor of the community arts magazine Le Chauffage.
