Intro to Stone Lithography

The lithographic stone presents the artist with one of the finest and most sensual surfaces on which to draw and paint. It provides endless opportunities for mark-making and suits every artistic style from expressionistic painting to fine detailed drawing. Participants in this course will develop a proficiency in stone lithography and a high standard of safety and good print shop practices. The goal is to complete at least 3 prints involving a range of specific techniques.
Gillian Armitage was first introduced to stone lithography as a student at Kingston-upon-Hull College of Art, Yorkshire, UK and she majored in printmaking at Western Washington University, Washington, USA. She has instructed lithography at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver and Kwantlen College, Surrey, BC and drawing, painting and design at Scarborough College of Art, Yorkshire, England. She is a past President of Malaspina Printmakers Society and was a Director of the Northwest Print Council, Portland, Oregon, USA.
Armitage’s prints have featured in several prestigious, international, juried print exhibitions including Second International Triennial of Graphic Art, Macedonia; International Graphic Biennale, Maastricht, Holland; 12th International Biennale, Cracow, Poland; 17th International Biennial, Ljublijana, Yugoslavia; Miniprint International Cadaques, Barcelona, Spain; World Print Three, Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.
