the studio

The Studio is the heart of Malaspina Printmakers.

As an artist-run centre, Malaspina Printmakers is an artist initiated and artist controlled organization that supports the development of printmaking as a contemporary art form and promotes and preserves traditional print practice.  A large aspect of Malaspina, and the original concept for the Centre’s creation, is supplying printmakers with a safe and state-of-the-art studio.

The Centre currently provides studio facilities to nearly 200 students and artists in addition to individuals who participate at the Centre as Volunteers, Members, and resident artist’s.  The unique nature of the medium requires the use of heavy and expensive equipment and a need to strictly comply with safety issues.  Few artists can afford or accommodate such equipment and ventilation requirements in their homes or studios.  Because of this, the communal aspect of the print studio is one that has been developed across Canada and the world.

In addition to being a production environment, the Studio is a classroom for Malaspina’s highly popular courses and workshops, a venue for artists demonstrations and talks, and as a destination for international artists to share their expertise.
