- Speaking with Many Voices – Printing with Many ProcessesSeptember 14 –November 2, 2010 Tuesday EveningsInstructor: Melanie BondCourse Fee: $240 Material Fee: $60Non- member course Fee: $270 Material Fee: $60There is an amazing wealth of knowledge among the practicing artists at Malaspina Printmakers. Drawing upon this, Many Voices will include discussion on the following topics:What is missing in the printing of a digital image? How can we fill this gap?In the reduction of an image to a line drawing what is gained? What is gained in turning a line drawing into an etching? In terms of visual language, what is the strength of a colour litho? How can we manipulate multiple layers to work as a cohesive image?Over the seven-week course, we will work collaboratively to produce three images. Each of these images will begin with a digital layer. Etching, lithography monotype and relief are possibilities for successive layers. The studio portion of the course will be an exploration of the strengths and weaknesses of layering multiple printmaking techniques. The finished works will be considered for inclusion in the upcoming member’s exhibition. This course is intended to help you learn to work with multiple printing processes to develop images with varied layers of visual languages. In this course you will learn to combine etching, lithography, relief and mono-print with digital printing to develop cohesive works. This course is most suitable for those with previous experience in at least one print mediumMelanie Bond completed her MFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia in 2008 and is the Studio Technician at Malaspina Printmakers. She has also completed a BSc. (Biochemistry) 1979 and a BFA (Visual Arts) 2005 at UBC and has studied drawing and painting at the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal. This course provides a thorough introduction to collograph printmaking. A collograph is a collaged plate in which the surface is built up using a variety of mediums. Collographs can achieve dramatic tonal effects and vibrant colours due to the depth of relief and differential inking that results from the collograph plate's highly textured surface. This 4-day workshop will cover building a collograph plate, inking techniques such as relief, intaglio and viscosity, and creating prints using multiple plates and colours.
